Android 4.4 doesn’t come with Google Chrome, OEMs can buy license or forget it
We just got wind of a new development on Android 4.4 KitKat (who we like to call kitkaty): Google isn’t shipping the OS with it’s home-brewed Chrome Web Browser. Vendors can choose to pay Google a token if they want to pre-install Google Chrome on their devices shipping with Android 4.4 KitKat.
This means that either your phone vendor pays Google a license fee before they can bundle Chrome browser with your kitkaty phone when shipping, or you have to download Google Chrome from Play Store by yourself, which doesn’t seem like a herculean task after all.
Where the real fear lies is that someday, Google might start charging license fees for other essential parts of it’s OS, and one day, vendors will have to pay money to install Android OS on their devices.
