Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus go official with bigger screens
Apple iPhone 6
The new flagship holds a 4.7″ display with a “Retina HD” resolution also known as 750 x 1,334 pixels, sending the PPI score to 348.
Just like the rumors had it, the phone is still powered by an 8MP rear camera which has been in use since the iPhone 4, except the new camera is much more improved than the later models. There sits a dual tone LED flash beside the camera. The front camera unit uses a 1.5µ pixels sensor.
Powering the new iPhone 6 is the 64-bit Apple A8 processor which is built on a 20nm process. Apple didn’t specify the amount of RAM on the new device however, don’t expect to see more than 1GB memory.
Apple also improved the connectivity fields on the new iPhone. NFC, LTE (CAT 4) and VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) are the few improvements you can find on the connectivity dashboard. The phone also features an in-built barometer which can count steps for you while jogging.
The new iPhone 6 officially goes for $199, $299 and $399 for the 16GB, 64GB and the 128GB version respectively. Pre-order starts 12th of this month while shipping begins on the 19th.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus
Contrary to the rumors, the larger iPhone 6 variant isn’t coming in December, in fact it’s here already. Even more disappointing is that the phone doesn’t have sapphire glass as boasted by the media.
The iPhone 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) IPS display, making it the first time Apple is using a regular/mainstream resolution on an iPhone screen.
Apple claims to have used an anodized aluminum for the back of the phone while a stainless steel frame rounds the four sides.
The phone uses an Apple A8 chipset which is 25% more powerful than the CPU on the iPhone 5s and offers 1.5 GPU performance of what the predeceasing A7 offers.
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus uses the same 8MP iSight camera at the rear, and also a 1.5µ pixels front-facing sensor. The main camera can record 1080p videos at 60 frames per second.
Speaking on connectivity, the phone features NFC, as well as LTE which offers up to 150 mbps download, also there’s a Wi-Fi 802.11ac adopter inside the machine.
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus comes i three memory configurations and these setups determine the outcome of the phone’s prices. The 16GB model goes for $299, the 64GB, $399 while the highest model — with 128 freaking gigabytes of storage space — goes for $499.
Apple will start taking pre-orders for the smartphone beginning 12th September (Friday) while shipping starts on September 18.
Hi PayPal, Apple also introduced a payment system that works with the NFC modules in the new iPhones. Apple says the payment processor is safe and secure (hacked iCloud account rings a bell?). It will also work by using your phone’s camera to scan a Mastercard or VISA American Express card, prompting the user to authenticate a payment with his/her fingerprint.
Apple Pay will be supported by over 22,000 retail stores including the ones owned by over 22,000 retailers will work with Apple Pay, including Macy’s, Wallgreens, Subway, Disney and Apple stores, Bloomingdales, Staples, Whole Foods Market, and McDonalds.
