India phone news round-up: Xiaomi Mi 4 coming soon, Xolo One getting Lollipop, etc
It’s weekend, lets give you a brief round-up of happenings in the India phone industry right now. From Chinese phone maker Xiaomi who just unveiled two beasts during the week; to Spice Mobiles who launched 7 smartphones in a single day.
Firstly, let’s talk about Xolo, coming out with the promised Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its Xolo One device. The update includes new Material Design user interface, an improved notification system and even a “Kill Switch” not forgetting the new security features.
Xolo added support for 15 local languages including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. The update also includes better battery management for the device, Guest user mode, improved hardware keyboard accessory support and redesigned Contacts, Calender, Calculator, etc. apps.
Taking of Xiaomi, the company says it will be launching the Mi 4 in India. The Mi 4 was announced last year with a 5-inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM and a storage of 16GB or 64GB. There’s an 13-megapixel camera and an 8MP one on the front, couped with the device’s 2.5GHz Snapdragon 805 chipset and 3080mAh battery.
Xiaomi Mi 4 is coming to India on 28th January even though prices haven’t been made known. However, sales of Xiaomi Mi 3 will be withdrawn from the country afterwards. Asked about the newly-announced Mi Note (and Mi Note Pro), Xiaomi GM in India Manu Kumar Jain explained “India is a priority market and the launch is definitely in the pipeline.”
In another development, Oppo R5, one of the thinnest smartphones ever made, is now available at “major retail stores” in the country. The device went on pre-order on New Year’s day for 29,990 rupees.
The device features 4.85mm-thick body. There’s a 5.5-inch IPS touchscreen with 1080p resolution, 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 805 processor and a 2000mAh battery
Finally, Spice, Micromax, and Celkon launched 9 smartphones exclusively at retailer HomeShop18. These handsets include Spice Mi-347, Spice Mi-401, Spice Mi-402, Spice Mi-501, Spice Mi-514, Spice Mi-551, Spice Mi-6115 PDA, Micromax Canvas A82 and Celkon Campus A356.
“The industry has witnessed highest mobile phone sales in the INR 5,000 – 15,000 price category, enabling India’s movement towards becoming the second largest smartphone market by 2016,” HomeShop18 CEO and founder, Sundeep Malhotra, explained.
“With this launch, we are providing our customers a plethora of mobiles from multiple brands that will certainly match their preferences and style,” he said.
