Marco Arment sends out refunds to everybody who purchased Peace ad block
The iOS 9 ad block saga has raised heads front, back and center. Pretty much everyone in the mobile industry has keyed in one input or the other regardless of their platform of choice. The loyalty of using
Android, iOS or Windows didn’t stop people from airing their views about the whole thing as you’d find thousands of discussions and arguments on Reddit, comment sections of different blogs and other places on social media about the whole thing. However, after all said and done, one fact emerged: many users don’t care about how and if website owners make money.
On the issue of making money, one man has offered himself as the proverbial sacrificial lamb: Marco Arment is the developer behind Peace, one of the most popular ad blocking apps on the Apple App Store shortly after the iOS 9 was released.
Arment fought with his conscience and humbly accepted a loss. His app — priced $3 — was downloaded millions of times on the store in less than 36 hours. Arment admitted he wouldn’t love to live to see his app causing losses to website owners whose ads are being blocked with the app on people’s phones. The developer shocked everyone when he pulled the app from the App Store.
All Marco wanted was PEACE…of mind.
Not many people saw this brave developer’s act as heroic. Many thought he was playing a publicity stunt but unknown to them, Arment has prepared a rude awakening for his doubters.
On Monday, on the Arment’s demand, Apple began issuing refunds to everyone who purchased Peace even as the app won’t/can’t be removed from their devices. Many users have come out to hail the programmer’s heroic decision with many more choosing to not seek for a refund. As expected, some still think Arment was foolish by kicking the huge source of income.
“I’m actually happy (due to the decision)” Marco Arment said in a blog post. “…As happy as someone can be who just made a lot of money on a roller coaster of surprise, guilt, and stress, then lost it all suddenly in a giant, unexpected reset that actually resolves things pretty well.”
He also posted screenshots from his App Store account to verify the refunds.
