Modular smartphone, Puzzlephone, launches on IndieGogo
A few smartphone makers are already going the way of the modular phone and soon enough, we might see this special breeds (or hybrids) of devices start competing vigorously with their non-modular counterparts in the market. Fairphone, PuzzlePhone and Google (Project Ara) have all been one way or the other involved in modular smartphone technology, the former two having even launched their own to that device while Google’s is delayed till and promised for next year.
PuzzlePhone has finally launched its much awaited modular smartphone via the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform (as announced earlier) and the device is set to achieve the goals of reaching $250,000 which the makers had set for themselves.
The thing about modular smartphones (such as this PuzzlePhone) is that as some parts begin to degenerate over years, you get the opportunity to replace these parts yourself and start using your phone over again as good as new. Instead of always investing in buying a new phone, you just change the faulty part. Securing the modular parts of the phone with screws also makes it easy for users to tweak it to their own taste when need be.
There’s a 5 inch Full HD display coming with the device and a 64-bit octa-core processor likewise. The CPU is clocked at 3GB of RAM and the smartphone exists in variants of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB as regards the internal storage memory. A 2400mAh battery runs the 12MP rear camera and powers the 5MP front camera as well, running the latest Android Marshmallow 6.0 out of the box.
The 16GB and 32GB are the “1st Edition” category of this device and they would respectively set you back $333 and $444 while the “Limited Edition” 64GB variant would have a copper trim and cost you $777.
