Nigerian Prisons begins confiscating cell phones from inmates
Nigeria, the “giant of Africa”, has began cleansing up the rot in it’s prisons. First, the Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS, has mandated that all inmates with mobile phones be rounded up, with their phones surrendered to authorities of the prisons.
Spokesman for the agency, Ope Fatinikun, claimed that prison wardens had no idea of how and when these phones are smuggled into the cells but he claimed that the collection of the phones by prison officers have started.
“I can assure you that the process of recovering all these cell phones has begun and we would work round -the-clock to ensure that they are recovered within the 30 days given by the minister,” Mr. Fatinikun.
“From my experience I would tell you that most of these cell phones are smuggled into the premises without the knowledge of the officials. Some of these inmates even go as far as concealing the phones in beverage sachets, but even before the directive we had been doing our best to recover them,” the spokesman added.
Nigerian, being the most populated country in Africa, has one of the biggest phone markets in the region although not a single phone is produced within the borders of the West African country.
