UMI Iron, 5.5-inch Android 5.1 LTE smartphone launched in Nigeria
The high-end section of Nigeria’s smartphone market just got a good boost as Chinese phone maker UMI announces the debut of their latest flagship handset in the West African country. Nigeria, being the most populated African country, also boasts of one of the largest and fastest growing smartphone markets on the continent and this phenomenon seems to have aroused the interest of foreign brands towards the country lately.
The UMI Iron, sporting a sleek metallic design that measures 152.3 x 76.5 x 7.9 mm and tips the scale at 148 grams, comes with an ample 5.5-inch IPS touchscreen display which has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, summing to a PPI figure of 401.
For software, the smartphone boots out of the box running on the all-new Android 5.1 Lollipop platform. Assisted by a dual tone LED flash, a 13-megapixel Sony sensor takes photos from the back of the device while an 8-megapixel front shooter lies at the front for all your selfie needs.
UMI Iron comes with a dual SIM card slot and packs support for 2G, 3G and LTE networks. The mobile phone is powered by an octa-core 1.7GHz 64-bit CPU and Mali-T760MP2 graphics alongside a MediaTek MT6753 SoC and 3GB of RAM. The handset is preloaded with 16GB of in-built storage which can further be expanded via the microSD card slot. Finally, the device is backed by a 3180mAh battery.
Pricing and availability
The Iron smartphone is exclusively available through UMI partners in Nigeria. One of them, Kulimart is offering the device for 43,000 naira. This translates to roughly $215 using the current exchange rates.
